Bobby Grossman's Polaroids 1975–1985

Bobby Grossman: Polaroids 1975–1985 presents a personal record of downtown New York during a decade of extraordinary cultural change. Made outside the boundaries of Grossman’s professional assignments, these Polaroids capture the spontaneity, friendships, and everyday encounters that surrounded his life and work.

A companion volume to Low Fidelity: Downtown New York 1975–1985, the book brings together informal portraits of artists, musicians, writers, and performers from Grossman’s circle. Subjects include Andy Warhol, Duncan Hannah, Debbie Harry, Glenn O’Brien, Fab 5 Freddy, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn, Robert Fripp, and Talking Heads members Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison, and David Byrne, among others.

Immediate and unguarded, the images offer a different perspective from Grossman’s black-and-white documentary photography. Rather than recording public performances or organized sessions, they preserve fleeting moments between friends—private fragments of the community that defined downtown New York during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
