Bobby Grossman's Corn Flakes Series

Bobby Grossman: Corn Flakes Series presents one of the photographer’s most playful and distinctive bodies of work. Using Corn Flakes boxes as informal portrait surfaces, Grossman combined photography, collage, commercial packaging, and popular culture to create an unconventional record of the friends and personalities surrounding him.

Created within the downtown New York community documented in Low Fidelity: Downtown New York 1975–1985, the series replaces the formality of conventional portraiture with humor, familiarity, and improvisation. The familiar cereal box becomes both a frame and a cultural object, linking each subject to the visual language of American consumer culture.

Subjects include Jackie Curtis, Richard Hell, Debbie Harry, Victor Hugo, Stiv Bators, Andy Warhol, Robert Fripp, David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, and others from Grossman’s circle. Together, the works form an intimate and irreverent portrait of the artists, musicians, and performers who shaped downtown New York.

A companion publication to Low Fidelity, the book brings the complete series together in a compact limited edition.
